A hopper is a type of block in Minecraft that works similar to a funnel. Items go into the wide top and are funneled into another block at the small bottom. If there isn't a block to collect the item the hopper will store it. One hopper has five inventory slots.

Players can make a hopper out of a chest and a few iron ingots. They can also be found in minecarts in abandoned mines. A hopper can be mined using any type of pickaxe.

Hoppers are typically used as an addition to Minecraft Redstone machines without needing more Redstone.

Required Materials to Make Hopper

Step By Step Guide to Make Hopper in Minecraft

In a Nutshell: Place a dropper in the middle-most cell, place 2 iron ingots in the top left and middle-left cells. Repeat it for the right side. Finally place an iron ingot at the bottom of the dropper.

Step 1. Craft a Chest

You'll need a chest to craft a hopper and then place eight wooden planks around the middle in the crafting grid to make a chest.

Step 2. Smelt Iron

Iron begins to spawn below Y level 64 and as long as you are below that coordinate, you should have a chance of finding raw iron. Mine it with at least a stone pickaxe, and head back to your furnace.

Place raw iron in the top slot and fuel in the bottom slot to start smelting your iron.

Once you have 5 iron ingots, you can now craft a hopper!

Step 3. Craft a Hopper

Head to a crafting table and place a chest in the middle most square. Then place iron ingots to the left, right, and below the chest. Place the last two ingots in the top right corner and the top left corner to craft your hopper.

How to Use a Hopper in Minecraft

There are many practical ways of using a Hopper in Minecraft. You can move blocks out of and into chests, create an automated disposal and even automate many forms of item collection.

A usable Minecraft block that would have an output slot can be placed on top of a hopper to get rid of the need to empty that block. For example, a player in Minecraft can collect kelp and smelt it in a furnace to make dried kelp.

The hopper underneath the furnace can collect the dry kelp and move it into a connected chest. Players can also connect hoppers for items that need to travel long distances.

#1. Moving Items In and Out of Chests

A hopper is one way to make processes in Minecraft automatic. They can take an item from a list of usable blocks and add it to chests, barrels, or other usable blocks.

This can be done by placing a hopper underneath the desired block and making sure the hopper is connected to a usable block. Players can make sure they are connected by crouching and placing their hopper while looking at the usable block.

With this configuration, the items from the chest will be pulled out.

#2. Creating an Automatic Disposal in Minecraft

If you lead your hopper trail to a dispenser, you can have the items from the hopper be dispensed into lava or a cactus block. Connect the hoppers to a dispenser and wire a redstone clock to the dispenser.

Any items placed into the chest will eventually be fed to the dispenser. The dispenser will shoot the items into the cactus, thus destroying the item.

You can make a simple redstone clock by connecting four repeaters together with redstone dust. Quickly the circuit power and take the power source away.

This will power the dispenser and can easily be connected to a lever or button for on/off convenience. To read more about redstone, click here!

#3. Creating an Automatic Item Collector in Minecraft

Hoppers can be crafted into a Minecart to travel and collect items. Players can do this with a hopper and a Minecart in a crafting table.

If a Minecart with Hopper is placed underneath a layer of blocks, it will pick up any items that it travels under.

Any items that fall on the top layer of stone will be picked up by the minecart. You can place hoppers at the end of the minecart track that feed into chests to pick up dropped items or crops.
